CABBIE GIRL PREPARES FOR VOYAGE OF HER LIFE

When Lisa Pover entered a competition held by the Liverpool Culture Company to find three crew members for the Clipper 07/08 round the world yacht race, she thought little of her chances of winning. However this 26 year old, who has been a night time hackney carriage driver in the city centre for the last five years, is now preparing for the longest ride of her life after winning a place on board the Liverpool 08 Clipper on one of seven gruelling race legs.

Seven months on from when Lisa first entered the competition she has now clocked up over 1000 nautical miles and has caught the sailing bug, “big time!” However not content with sailing just one leg she set about saving money from working 12 hour night shifts so she could fulfil her dream to complete the full circumnavigation. Lisa commented “I couldn’t believe it when I found out that there was not one Scouser on board the ‘Liverpool 08’ boat for the whole race, it just didn’t seem right. I really believe that these things come around once in a lifetime, and I am fortunate enough that my husband Chris thinks the same!” She went onto say “I have been in touch with a number of Liverpool companies to sponsor me and one way or another I will be on that boat in September, from start to finish and be the flag bearer for Liverpool”.

Tim Day of BREAD Card, one of Lisa’s sponsors, commented ‘Lisa sums up what Liverpool is all about, and is an excellent role model and ambassador for the city. I was completely bowled over by her ambition, drive and passion’.

Clipper 07-08 sets off from Liverpool’s Albert Dock during our 800th birthday celebrations on 16th September 2007 and returns to the city in summer 2008; right in the middle of Liverpool’s celebrations as European Capital of Culture 2008.  It’s the longest circumnavigation race taking 10 months to complete, visiting ports including South Africa, Hawaii, Singapore and many more.
