frequently asked questions

I have been given a limited features BREAD card, how do I upgrade to a full features card?

This is easy. Simply send us the following proofs of your identity to: BREAD Card, Payment Card Solutions, Card Services, PO BOX 64645, London, SW89DR

A photocopy of your passport showing the photo, OR your UK driving licence showing your photo, OR any other government-issued ID document

AND an ORIGINAL of one document from this list, which must be less than 3 months old and must be in your name:

  • a gas, electricity, water, or landline phone bill
  • a council tax bill
  • a credit card or bank statement

What are the differences between a full feature and limited feature BREAD Card?

With a limited features card, you may only spend up to £1650 in a calendar year and you may only withdraw a maximum of £650 a year from an ATM. You also may not apply for a secondary card which can be used to share money with friends / family until you have upgraded to a full feature BREAD Card.

Can I use my Bread Card with PayPal?

We cannot guarantee the acceptability of our cards with any merchant but we do have thousands of customers linking their cards to PayPal and both paying money into and from their PayPal accounts. A common confusion however is that when people try to link their cards initially to their PayPal accounts without first loading their Bread card, it appears that it is not being accepted. This is because PayPal generally make a small charge to "verify" the card. If there are no funds loaded to your card, then this will fail. So, before trying to link your Bread Card to your PayPal account, please load it first.

Is my BREAD Prepaid Mastercard Card like a normal bank debit card or credit card?

Your BREAD Prepaid Mastercard card is not a credit card or charge card, it's a prepaid card that carries a variable amount of money based on the amount loaded onto the account when the card is purchased or at a subsequent time after purchase. Each time you use the card to buy something or withdraw cash at an ATM, the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance.

You can order your card from this website. You can pay for the card by using cash at a PayPoint outlet or online using an existing debit or credit card, or you can pay using an SMS text message (for this you will need a mobile phone.) If you are unable to pay by either of these methods, you can apply by post, and pay with a Postal Order. To issue a card we will need your passport number or UK driving licence number, and a delivery address for the card. If applying by post, please include a recent utility bill or bank statement.
